The Georgia Bulldogs moved up to the number two position in the AP Top 25 poll released on Sunday following their victory over Florida. The Bulldogs defeated their in-state rivals by a score of 27-8 in a game that featured a strong defensive performance. Georgia forced four turnovers during the contest and returned one of those turnovers for a touchdown. The win improved their standing in the national rankings as they continue their push for a championship.
Florida dropped to number twenty-five after suffering its third loss of the season. The Gators' decline in the poll contrasts with their rival's ascent. Meanwhile, Ohio State fell out of the top ten after losing to the USC Trojans. Voters showed little sympathy for the Buckeyes, who started freshman quarterback Luke Fahey for the first time in his career. The loss gives Ohio State two defeats on the season and tightens their schedule for the remainder of the campaign.
USC climbed back into the poll at number eighteen after the win against Ohio State. The Trojans gained momentum from the victory. Utah rose to number three as a direct beneficiary of Ohio State's slide. The upcoming matchup between Utah and BYU is now a top-ten contest, with the Cougars sitting at number seven. This ranking sets the stage for a competitive Holy War this weekend.
Notre Dame moved up to number four after a strong second-half performance against Navy. The Fighting Irish will face Miami in a top-four clash in South Bend. Miami remains at number one after overcoming a late-game threat from North Carolina. The Hurricanes survived a Halloween scare to maintain their top spot in the latest poll release.
New Mexico entered the AP Top 25 for the first time in program history following a win over San Jose State. The Lobos start the season with a record of seven wins and one loss. Their current standing positions them as a candidate for the College Football Playoff as the Group of Six participant. Head coach Jason Eck has seen his team's profile rise sharply during the current campaign.
The complete poll includes Northwestern with 79 votes, Oregon with 55, UTSA with 43, SMU with 27, Virginia Tech with 12, Duke with 10, Minnesota with 8, Liberty with 4, Oklahoma State with 3, and Louisville with 1. These teams received votes but did not secure a spot in the main top-25 list. The next rankings will be released after Week 10 games are completed.
