Massachusetts residents voted on Tuesday to decide whether Governor Maura Healey would serve a second term or hand the office to Republican challenger Mike Minogue. Healey cast her ballot at Hardy Elementary School in Arlington during the morning hours. Minogue had already voted during the early voting period. The race also featured independent candidate Andrea James.

Healey has held a wide lead in polling data released before the election. Minogue, a U.S. Army veteran and former chief executive of medical device firm Abiomed, secured the Republican nomination and spent millions of his own money on the campaign. The contest grew contentious as the candidates traded attacks during two television debates.

Healey frequently connected Minogue to President Donald Trump, citing Minogue's fundraising efforts for the president in 2024. In return, Minogue criticized Healey for the state's affordability issues. The candidates also debated a proposal to suspend a tax and an endorsement from the Massachusetts State Police union. Minogue argued the union supported Healey to secure a better contract. Healey described that claim as a mischaracterization and distanced her from Minogue's comments. Minogue later stated his concerns were directed at Healey, not the troopers.

Minogue ran on a joint ticket with New Bedford City Councilor Oliver for the lieutenant governor position. Oliver suspended his campaign last month after facing charges in an incident on Oct. 17. Minogue said that if he won the governorship, Oliver would not serve as his lieutenant governor.

Healey became the first woman to serve as governor of Massachusetts in 2022. She previously held the office of state attorney general for two terms. Her election in 2022 made her one of only two women currently serving as governors in the United States, alongside Oregon's Tina Kotek.
