Ukrainian authorities staged a humanitarian convoy in the town of Armyansk on Thursday, positioning 25 buses, ambulances, and other vehicles for an aid mission scheduled for Friday. The operation targets Oleshky, a city in the Kherson region where residents have been cut off from supplies by heavy fighting and mined roads.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's ombudsman and chief negotiator, confirmed the deployment from Armyansk, a town in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine located approximately 53 miles south of Oleshky. Lubinets stated the primary objective is to distribute aid to every resident in need, with specific focus on the elderly and people with disabilities.
The aid delivery relies on a localized ceasefire that has been in place since Tuesday. This truce was brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, who led negotiations between Lubinets and his Russian counterpart, Yana Lantratova.
While the truce holds in and around Oleshky, Moscow and Kyiv remain fully engaged in the wider war that began more than 4.5 years ago with Russia's full-scale invasion. Previous ceasefire attempts have failed or collapsed quickly, making the current arrangement a critical test for the ongoing humanitarian effort.
Oleshky gained international attention earlier this week as its population became stranded with dwindling food and medicine stocks. The convoy's presence in Armyansk marks the immediate logistical step before the vehicles enter the occupied city.
