Isaac Wilson threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Charlie Williams in overtime to give Colorado a 27-24 victory over Kansas State on Saturday. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Buffaloes, improving their record to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12 Conference.
The game was decided in the final moments of regulation. With two seconds remaining, Kansas State quarterback Blake Barnett completed a 3-yard pass to Garrett Oakley, tying the score at 24. In overtime, Colorado won the coin flip and chose to defend. The Wildcats stalled at their own 7-yard line, and kicker Luis Rodriguez converted a 25-yard field goal to give Kansas State its first lead of the extra period. Colorado then drove the length of the field to secure the win.
Running back Richard Young had his most productive game of his collegiate career. The former Alabama player rushed 24 times for 120 yards, a career high. He scored a 2-yard touchdown in the first half and added a 22-yard run with 12 minutes and 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter to put Colorado ahead 21-14. Young also carried the ball 14 times during the overtime period.
Kansas State coach Collin Klein made a strategic decision late in regulation. After a Colorado timeout, Klein opted to send Rodriguez to the field for a tying kick rather than go for the win on fourth down. Rodriguez had previously missed field goal attempts from 49 and 43 yards earlier in the game. He finished 18 of 28 passing for 224 yards and three touchdowns for the Wildcats.
The Buffaloes held the lead for much of the second half. JaQuail Smith broke a 7-7 tie in the third quarter with a 47-yard rushing touchdown. Kansas State responded with a four-play, 75-yard drive that ended in a 33-yard catch-and-run touchdown by tight end Linkon Cure, tying the score at 14. The game remained tied at 7 at halftime, with Young and Barnett each scoring in the first half.
Kansas State hosts Oklahoma State on Saturday, while Colorado travels to Arizona State for its next contest.
