Evanescence brought its "Sanctuary" tour to Red Rocks on Oct. 26, and 12 of the 21 songs in the set came from the band's newest album. The show drew fans willing to stand through a cold fall night at the amphitheater. A little more than a dozen songs in, the crowd sang along to "Bring Me to Life."
Amy Lee fronted the performance with guitarist Tim McCord, Troy McCord on guitar, bassist Emma Anzai, and drummer Will Hunt. Lee also handled the rap passages in "Bring Me to Life," parts she wrote for Paul McCoy of 12 Stone. McCoy's vocals appear on the studio recording.
"I am so grateful to be here," Lee said from the stage before sitting at her piano for "Forever Without You" midway through the set. "Every moment is a gift. Truly, it is." She went on to tell the crowd that she has been on this earth for almost 45 years, and that "life will keep surprising you."
"Tonight is the night that we are all here together, feeling the power of humanity, right?" she continued. "So in a moment, later this week, this month, this year, when you feel alone and hopeless, remember this feeling."
The band's history with "Bring Me to Life" runs through Wind Up Records. The label, which also carried Drowning Pool, Creed and 12 Stones, pressed Evanescence to add a rapper and threatened to shelve the record when the band pushed back. That standoff lasted almost a month. A soundtrack deal the label had arranged moved the situation forward, and the band agreed to include a rap part on "Bring Me to Life" with McCoy on vocals.
The 2003 single has since drawn 2.2 billion streams on Spotify. "My Immortal," also from the "Daredevil" soundtrack that year, sits 1.5 billion streams behind it. Evanescence has released six albums to date, including "Sanctuary."
The set at Red Rocks ran through "Sanctuary," "Tell Me When You've Had Enough," "Afterlife," "Rapture," "Going Under," "Lithium," "Like You," "Self Destruct," "Calm Down," "Call Me When You're Sober," "Beautiful Lie," "Wasted on You," "Forever Without You," "Bring Me to Life," "Imaginary," "Better Without You," "About Us," "Fight Like a Girl" with K.Flay, "Who Will You Follow," "My Immortal," and "Wide Open Heart."
Lee spoke to the crowd again after "Forever Without You." "Remember what it means to be human and remember what is real," she said. "No matter what happens tomorrow, we have tonight."
