Jamie Dornan has accepted the role of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a film currently in production. He steps into a part previously defined by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s 2000s trilogy.

The new movie’s timeline sits between the original Lord of the Rings films and the prequel Hobbit movies. This chronological placement explains the casting choice. Mortensen is 68, while Dornan is 44. The younger actor fits the character’s age during the specific events depicted in the new script.

Dornan discussed the weight of the decision in an interview with L’Officiel Italia. He described the process as carrying a distinct burden. “There’s pressure when you try to follow in those footsteps,” Dornan said, according to an English translation of the interview.

He emphasized that he does not view the role as a competition. Dornan stated that he has no desire to outperform the original actor. “I’ve been asked to take on a super iconic role, and I’ll do my absolute best,” he said. He added that Mortensen’s portrayal remains his favorite version of the character.

Dornan expressed humility regarding his new assignment. He said he feels honored to attempt to capture some of the energy Mortensen brought to the part. “For me, Aragorn will always be Viggo, and only Viggo,” Dornan noted.

Leo Woodall, who plays the ranger Halvard in the new film, offered a different perspective. Woodall told the publication that he was impressed by Dornan’s work. “I can honestly say that, for me, Aragorn is now Jamie Dornan,” Woodall said.

Andy Serkis directs the project and returns to the screen as Gollum and Sméagol. The cast includes several original trilogy veterans. Ian McKellen reprises his role as Gandalf, Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace plays Thranduil. Kate Winslet and Anya Taylor-Joy join the ensemble as Marigol and Seren. The film opens in theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
