Colorado women’s basketball opens the 2026-27 season on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the CU Events Center against Morgan State. The Buffs enter the contest following a 22-12 record in the previous campaign. This season marks the 11th year for head coach JR Payne at the helm of the program.
The team’s current roster presents a different challenge for Payne than in recent years. For the past five seasons, the Buffs have relied on athletic wings to earn four NCAA Tournament berths. Now, the squad possesses substantial size in the paint. Payne is reviewing game film from earlier in her career to adapt her strategy to this new personnel mix.
Adler, a 6-foot-5 center, anchors the interior. She averaged 15.4 points and six rebounds while playing for Boston last year. She previously played at Rhode Island. Payne noted that she is studying how to utilize players like Adler by looking back at strategies used with Aaronette Vonleh, the last true low-post presence on the roster.
The Buffs have additional options in the post through three returnees. Logyn Greer, a 6-foot-4 forward, started all 34 games last year, averaging 9.2 points and 5.0 rebounds. During a recent exhibition game against Division II Adams State, Greer made three of five three-point attempts. Jade Crook, a 6-foot-5 player, and Sophie Zadel, a 6-foot-4 forward, saw limited minutes last season. Crook averaged 3.1 points and 2.0 rebounds in 33 games, while Zadel played 6.5 minutes per game in 18 appearances.
Payne emphasized that the team’s identity remains rooted in effort and discipline. "I think on the court, the hallmark of any program I’ve ever been a part of has been we’re the hardest working, toughest, most disciplined team in the country," Payne said. She stated that while shooting percentages and health are variables, the team can control its daily work ethic.
Morgan State opened its season on Monday with a 103-47 victory over Washington Adventist University. The Bears’ first-year guard, Dru Carlton, led the team with 14 points. Colorado’s top returnee is guard Zyanna Walker, who needs 77 points to reach 1,000 career points. Walker and forward Aniya’ Foy missed the recent exhibition due to injuries but could return for the opener. The Buffs will host Fresno State on Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
