Novelist Sinclair Lewis won the Nobel Prize in Literature on Nov. 5, 1930. He was the first American to receive that honor. The Swedish Academy selected Lewis for his work. His victory marked a shift in global literary recognition.
Lewis lived from 1885 to 1951. He was born in Sauk Centre, Minn. He is known for satirical novels such as "Main Street" and "Babbitt." These books critiqued American provincialism and consumerism. His writing style influenced a generation of writers.
The Nobel Prize was established by Alfred Nobel's will. It has been awarded annually since 1901. The literature category recognizes authors who have produced the most beautiful writing in an idealistic spirit. Lewis was the first U.S. citizen to claim that specific prize.
