Melat Kiros is set to become the first Black, Gen Z, and democratic socialist to represent Colorado in the U.S. House of Representatives. The 29-year-old campaign manager secured a projected victory in Colorado's first congressional district. She described the moment as surreal and a historic milestone for the state.
In her first interview following the win, Kiros outlined her immediate legislative priorities. She said her team must reverse recent federal cuts to SNAP and Medicaid. She also plans to roll back tax cuts for wealthy individuals. Kiros stated that her long-term goal is to fight for Medicare for all.
Kiros attributed her victory to a large ground game. Her campaign relied on 8,000 volunteers who knocked on more than 100,000 doors. Those volunteers also made over 500,000 phone calls. Kiros said this approach returned politics to a neighbor-to-neighbor style of engagement.
The campaign faced scrutiny over the Boulder firebombing attack. Kiros initially did not label the attack as antisemitic until the perpetrator’s intent was confirmed. The suspect recently admitted in federal court that his motive was the victims' Jewish identities. He confessed to committing a hate crime.
In response to the court admission, Kiros said the attack was motivated by anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. She emphasized that Karen Diamond, one of the victims, is still missing. Kiros vowed to fight to prevent similar hateful violence from occurring again.
Kiros joins a growing number of democratic socialists in Congress. She said voters are recognizing economic crises and viewing socialism as a solution to capitalism's problems. During her election night celebration, she embraced Denver Mayor Wellington Webb. She thanked him for his support and leadership.
Kiros also thanked her family and the thousands of volunteers who worked in Denver for months. In her final remarks to the crowd, she expressed a lifetime of gratitude. She promised to pay that debt back by fighting for her constituents.
