Kucherov trade request leaves Tampa Bay with seven viable suitors
A meeting in Nashville ended with a formal request to move, creating a complex market for the 34-year-old winger who seeks a $20 million annual contract.

Nikita Kucherov is now formally requesting a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, a move that forces the franchise to rethink its immediate future and opens a high-stakes market for the 2024 Hart Trophy winner.
The situation escalated after a meeting in Nashville last Friday between Kucherov, his agent Dan Milstein, and Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois. At 6:49 p.m. ET on that day, the trade request became public. By 9:35 p.m., BriseBois issued a statement asserting the team had no intention of moving its star. The following day, coach Jon Cooper told reporters that Kucherov is committed to the group for the remainder of the season. On Monday, Kucherov addressed the media directly, stating that the dispute was about communication and respect rather than money.
Contractual friction has defined the past four months. The Lightning reportedly offered Kucherov approximately $13 million annually in the summer, later raising that figure to $15 million. Kucherov, who turns 34 in June, is seeking an average annual value of $20 million. This demand aligns with the market rates set by recent deals, such as Cale Makar’s record $20.8 million cap hit with the Colorado Avalanche. A former teammate noted that Kucherov and the organization had only two contract conversations in the four months leading up to the trade request.
Three teams stand out as the most logical destinations for a winger of Kucherov’s caliber. The Montreal Canadiens offer familiarity and a rising roster. Coach Martin St. Louis was a former teammate, and young forward Ivan Demidov shares Kucherov’s agent. The team’s cap management makes it a plausible fit despite the cost. The Utah Mammoth present a similar East-Coast style fit in the West. Kucherov’s close friend and former teammate, defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, plays for Utah and is signed through 2030-31. The team has a young core and offensive talent like Clayton Keller who could elevate Kucherov’s game. The Dallas Stars have the financial flexibility to absorb a $20 million AAV. They will see $21.85 million in cap space open next summer as Jason Robertson and Tyler Seguin become unrestricted free agents.
The Golden Knights, New York Rangers, and other contenders also possess the infrastructure to support a move of this magnitude. Las Vegas would require burying contracts to make room, while New York has a history of signing Russian-born stars to accelerate rebuilds. The presence of countrymen like Ivan Barbashev in Las Vegas adds a layer of personal connection for Kucherov.
The timeline for the next steps is immediate. The Lightning must determine if they will entertain trade calls or hold Kucherov until he becomes a free agent in the summer. Kucherov will play out the current season with Tampa Bay regardless of the final decision. The outcome will depend on whether the Lightning accept the trade request or if Kucherov uses his leverage to secure the $20 million deal he seeks during the next window.
For now, the focus remains on the ice. Kucherov has stated he will do everything possible to help his teammates win this season. The organizational structure in Tampa Bay faces a critical decision that will define its competitive trajectory for the next decade.
