Russell Brand was found guilty of rape and sexual assault on Thursday at Southwark Crown Court in London. The British actor-comedian, now 51, faces a prison sentence that Judge Joel Bennathan described as substantial. The judge rejected a request for bail, citing the risk that Brand might flee, and he was taken into custody immediately following the verdict.

The jury, composed of eight men and four women, spent more than eight hours deliberating over two days. Brand was convicted on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted on two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. When the guilty verdict on the rape count was read, Brand closed his eyes but otherwise showed little emotion. Upon learning his bail was denied, he gestured to his legal team and repeatedly stated, "I’m good, I’m good, I’m good," before being led away.

Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones characterized Brand as a calculating sexual predator during the trial. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of London’s Metropolitan Police noted that the conviction demonstrated the resilience of the four women who reported the incidents. Furphy stated that Brand used his fame and influence to exploit the women, adding that his sense of entitlement grew alongside his public profile.

The charges stem from incidents occurring between 1999 and 2009. One conviction relates to a sexual assault at a London bar in 2004. Another involves kissing and groping a woman at a radio station in either 2004 or 2005. A third guilty verdict concerns the anal rape of a fan he met backstage at a comedy show in 2009. The fourth conviction involves a 2009 advertisement recording where Brand allegedly demanded a massage and pressed his face into a woman’s groin.

Brand was acquitted on two other charges. He was cleared of raping a woman in a hotel room in Bournemouth during a 1999 Labour Party conference. He was also acquitted of attempting to indecently assault a woman by dragging her into a men’s bathroom at an MTV office in London. Brand denied all charges, testifying that while he led a promiscuous life as a young man, he never forced anyone to act against their will.

Brand, known for his early 2000s television and radio work as well as Hollywood films, has recently relocated to Florida. He has built an online following by sharing videos on wellness and his religious devotion. His wife, Laura, testified as a character witness in his defense. Brand stated in the witness box that the case had consumed his life, noting that friends and colleagues had abandoned him.

Judge Bennathan acknowledged the hardship the trial caused to Brand’s children but stated that the hardship resulted from the father’s serious criminal offending. Brand is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday.
