Emma Morgan became the first woman to lead Ralphie in a front position during a game against Utah on Oct. 17. The University of Colorado Boulder senior occupied the front right spot as the buffalo ran down Folsom Field.

Morgan, a senior from New Castle, stood by the pen as a university employee counted down to zero. She yelled "Sko Buffs" to begin the run. She then guided the animal out of the pen and focused on her teammates and the buffalo as they moved down the field.

The front right position requires more speed and strength than the back positions. The runner in this spot signals the start of the run and ensures the field is clear. They also control how far Ralphie runs and manage the turn. Morgan stated that she must stay on top of the cues given to the buffalo and communicate with the other front runner.

Ralphie VII weighs nearly 800 pounds and can reach speeds of 25 mph on game days. Four handlers run with the buffalo while 13 other teammates line up around the field and trailer. The on-field handlers form an arc to guide the animal's path. Everyone runs behind the buffalo to help return her to the trailer.

Morgan began her time on the team in the back right position. This is the easiest spot because the runner stays on the inside track and does not steer. After excelling in that role, her coaches moved her to the back left. That position is harder because the runner is more likely to be swung off during turns.

Taylor Stratton, Morgan's coach, said the athlete rose to every challenge. Stratton described Morgan as a fast and technical runner who is also strong in the weight room. She holds the women's team record for hang cleans at 164 pounds. Stratton noted that the team was thrilled for Morgan's success.

Morgan learned she would run in the front position about an hour before the game. She said she felt confident and in the right headspace. The runner in the front right position is responsible for making sure the buffalo goes into the trailer on the way back. Morgan said it is a surreal feeling to run alongside the animal and see her teammates.
