Northeast Baltimore police released body camera footage on Wednesday showing an officer shooting an armed man near the Erdman Shopping Center. The video documents the final moments of an encounter that left the 44-year-old man in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.
The incident occurred last month when an officer was seated in a cruiser near the shopping center, which sits close to a library and a daycare facility. According to a statement from the Baltimore Police Department, the officer noticed a man walking into the parking lot. The footage shows the man approaching the vehicle for reasons that remain unclear.
The interaction escalated when the man began running away from the officer. The officer initially pursued him in the patrol car before exiting to chase him on foot. During the foot pursuit, the man turned around and started chasing the officer. The video captures the man pointing a firearm in the officer's direction, at which point the officer fired a shot.
The man fell to the ground after being shot. Police officers provided aid to him until emergency services arrived and took over care. He was transported to the hospital, where he has not yet been identified. The officer involved in the shooting was not injured and has not been named by the department.
Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene following the incident. The Baltimore Police Department released both the body camera video and footage from a private surveillance camera in the area to provide a complete picture of the event.
Maryland's Office of the Attorney General is currently investigating the shooting. Investigators are asking anyone with information, including those with cell phone or private video, to contact them. The office provided a phone number, (410) 576-7070, and an email address, IID@oag.maryland.gov, for reporting details.
The release of the footage comes as part of the ongoing review by the state attorney general's office. The department stated that the man's condition remains critical but stable as he receives treatment at the area hospital.
