Fans in the Atlanta metro area gained a new option for watching the Georgia-Florida football rivalry this weekend. The Bulldogs defeated the Gators 27-8 on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, marking the first time the annual matchup was played in the city.
The game has traditionally taken place in Jacksonville, Florida. However, the venue will not host the event until 2028 while the Jacksonville Jaguars renovate their stadium. The series follows a rotating schedule to accommodate this construction. After the Atlanta edition, the game moves to Tampa next year.
Supporters filled the downtown area on Saturday afternoon, wearing colors for both teams. Elijah Barnes, a resident of Buford, noted that the location offers convenience for fans from both sides. He pointed to the city's recent experience hosting international soccer events as proof of its capability.
“It’s local, it’s convenient, it’s a good time,” Barnes said. He added that the police and first responders coordinated effectively during the World Cup, making this event a manageable task for the city. Barnes called the stadium one of the best places in the United States for sporting events.
Cindy Spritzer, who lives in Lake Oconee, traveled to the city by bus with friends. She preferred the Atlanta venue to the traditional choices of the Swamp in Gainesville or Sanford Stadium in Athens. Spritzer said the move makes logical sense for the city and the fan experience.
The 27-8 final score capped a day that shifted the rivalry's geography for the short term. The next scheduled appearance for this specific rivalry will take place in Tampa in 2027.
