Abdinasir Hassan won the Class 5A cross-country state championship on Saturday at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs. The Northfield junior ran a time of 14:56.41, which set a new Class 5A course record. This mark was nearly 15 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Jude Ritzenhein, a sophomore from Niwot, took the silver medal in that race.

Hassan’s victory capped a season defined by rapid improvement. He established a new all-time record at the Liberty Bell Invitational on Sept. 5. That meet serves as a traditional early-season benchmark. Hassan recorded a time of 14:24.56 in that event. He broke the previous record of 14:30.1, which had belonged to Parker Wolfe. Wolfe is a former Cherry Creek star and current professional runner. Hassan ran his final mile at a pace of approximately 4:20 to secure that lead.

The junior said he felt ill the day before the Liberty Bell race. He reported a stomach ache and a headache, which kept him home from school. Upon entering the race, he described feeling amazing. He said he did not go all out at the start but accelerated hard during the final mile. This performance confirmed his physical condition to him. He stated that even when not 100% healthy, nothing could hold him back.

Hassan began his high school athletic career as a freshman at Rangeview. He finished 103rd at the state cross-country meet with a time over 17 minutes. That spring, he placed in the top 10 in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter events at state track. He sat out the 2024-2025 season due to transfer rules after enrolling at Northfield. Coach Joey Bender first saw Hassan compete at a JV meet in Portland. Bender noted that Hassan’s fearlessness in racing stood out more than his raw speed.

During the 2024-2025 track season, Hassan ran for the Great Strides Track Club. He set national sophomore records in several events. He recorded a mile time of 4:00.90 in St. Louis and won the Nike Outdoor Nationals title in 4:01.88. He also set national sophomore marks in the 3,200-meter run at 8:43.03 and the 5K at 13:52.31. Hassan said that track season opened his eyes to his potential at the national level.

College coaches are now monitoring his progress. Programs from Oregon, Florida, Northern Arizona, Virginia, Oregon State, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Alabama have expressed interest. Hassan plans to take official visits this winter and next spring. He expects to make his college decision early in his senior year. He is currently 17 years old.

Hassan aims to break three Colorado state records this spring. He targets the 800-meter mark of 1:48.50 and the 1,600-meter mark of 4:04.36. Both times were set by Harrison Witt of Mountain Vista in 2021. He also targets the 3,200-meter record of 8:55.94 held by Parker Wolfe. For next fall, he wants to repeat as the state champion and break the all-classification meet mark of 14:40.52. That record was set by Coronado senior Oliver Horton on Saturday morning.
