Lamar Jackson is out of the Baltimore Ravens' game against the Buffalo Bills after suffering a thumb injury on his team's first offensive play of the week. The two-time MVP entered the game with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter at Highmark Stadium. On a first-and-10 snap, Jackson attempted a pass to Zay Flowers. His throwing hand collided with a defender's arm during the motion, causing immediate pain that forced him to the sideline.

Baltimore's training staff moved Jackson to the locker room immediately after the play. The team confirmed he suffered a thumb injury and declared him out for the remainder of the contest. A right-handed thumb injury is particularly damaging for a quarterback because it limits the grip strength needed to control the football. Jackson had just returned to the field after missing the previous three games due to an ankle injury sustained in Week 4.

The injury leaves the Ravens without their starting signal-caller. Tyler Huntley entered the game to replace Jackson but lasted only into the second quarter. Huntley suffered a toe injury during that period, forcing Baltimore to turn to its third-string option. Rookie Joe Fagnano, an undrafted player from UConn, made his first career appearance as a starter. This marks his debut in the NFL after coming off the bench for the first seven games.

The timing of the injury disrupts a matchup that was expected to be a centerpiece of Week 8. The Ravens' performance has varied significantly with Jackson's presence on the field. In the four games he played this season, Baltimore averaged 29.8 points per game and finished with a 3-1 record. During the three weeks Jackson sat out, the team went 1-2 and averaged 17.7 points per game. The statistical gap illustrates how much the offense relies on its starter to generate points.

The Ravens must now prepare for a short turnaround to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night in Week 9. The team has already ruled Jackson out for Sunday's game, which raises questions about his availability for the next contest. A thumb injury often requires time to heal, and the compressed schedule offers little room for recovery before the Thursday night kickoff.
