Manchester United now sit one point and one place outside the Premier League relegation zone. The 20-time English champions were eliminated from contention for a top-three finish after a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday. Coventry City’s 3-1 victory over Sunderland further compressed the table, leaving United in their first nine-match winless league run since 1986.
The match at Stamford Bridge saw United reduced to ten men when Lisandro Martinez received a second yellow card. The Argentine defender was sent off for a reckless aerial challenge on Wesley Fofana during a corner kick. Chelsea capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Morgan Rogers scoring a solo goal and Cole Palmer converting a penalty. United manager Ruben Amorim, in his first full season in charge, noted the disparity between the two halves of play.
Bruno Fernandes, recalled as captain, missed several key opportunities in the first half. Despite an improved start to the match, United have now recorded their worst opening stretch of a league season in 40 years. They have secured only one victory in their first nine Premier League games this campaign. Their other win this season came against tournament newcomer Sabah in the Champions League.
The club’s record of two wins from 13 matches across all competitions includes a result against promoted side Ipswich Town. Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 loss at Brentford prevented United from dropping into the bottom three on the day. However, a point for Crystal Palace in the final match of the day against Tottenham would have pushed United into that group.
Bryan Mbeumo, who played for United, defended the team's effort. “I think the mentality was there right from the first minute,” Mbeumo said. “We still trust everyone. Maybe today we just missed some chances. We could have been up early in the game, but that’s a positive to take out of this game.”
United return to action on Tuesday for a Champions League match at home against Roma. Carrick expects to lead the team into that fixture. “The two halves of football couldn’t probably be further apart,” Carrick said. “We looked in a good place going into half-time and then found a way of unravelling it second half.”
The next Premier League match for United is scheduled for the following weekend. The team faces further scrutiny as the season progresses. Current standings place them just above the relegation battle, a position unseen in the club's modern history.
