Maggiano's Little Italy at 500 16th St. in Denver is temporarily closed and plans to reopen within the next week, a restaurant spokesperson said Wednesday afternoon. A sign posted on the door reads, "Unfortunately, Maggiano's will be closed until further notice." The message circulated on social media, prompting concern among diners about the future of the downtown location.
The closure is tied to upgrades at the restaurant, according to general manager Jon Nirenberg. The Denver location opened in 1998 alongside the Denver Pavilions. Colorado has one other Maggiano's, in the Denver Tech Center, according to the company website.
The chain began in November 1991, opening at the corner of Clark Street and Grand Avenue in Chicago. Brinker International acquired Maggiano's in 1995, a move that preceded its expansion to multiple locations across the country. The company has not specified what work is underway at the 16th Street dining room. A staff member also confirmed the temporary nature of the closure Wednesday morning.
Maggiano's operates as a sit-down Italian-American restaurant brand. The downtown Denver location sits within the Denver Pavilions complex along the 16th Street Mall, a corridor of retail and dining spaces that draws pedestrian traffic from surrounding office towers and hotels.
