High school football state championships will not be played at Gillette Stadium in December.
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association made the announcement on Monday. It cited scheduling constraints at the New England Patriots and Revolution home venue. This marks the first time in twenty years that the title games will move.
The MIAA stated it learned of the change late last week. The 2026 tournament begins this week. Officials said they are working to secure new host sites for the student-athletes and school communities.
The conflict stems from the professional teams’ late-season schedule. The Patriots host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, December 6. The MIAA must hold its championship games during the first week of December. This creates a tight window between the two events.
The New England Revolution also factor into the logistics. The team has clinched a playoff berth. It may host an MLS postseason match on either December 2 or December 5. If a game occurs on those dates, the involved teams need to practice on the Gillette Stadium playing surface the day before.
A Gillette Stadium spokesperson confirmed the decision in a written statement. The spokesperson noted that the Kraft family has donated the venue for these games for nearly two decades. The spokesperson said the Revolution's playoff schedule and the Patriots' home game on December 6 created unavoidable logistics issues. The statement added that the stadium hopes to host the event again in the future.
The MIAA did not name replacement venues in its initial statement. It said it will work diligently to find locations that provide the best possible championship experience. The new sites will be announced as the tournament progresses this week.
