Aurora Public Schools Superintendent Michael Giles Jr. faces driving under the influence charges following an arrest early Saturday morning. The incident occurred southeast of Aurora near the intersection of E-470 and East Quincy Avenue at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 31, according to Arapahoe County Sheriff officials.
A deputy on scene reported seeing Giles swerve across lanes and proceed through a red light. The officer pulled the vehicle over and administered a roadside sobriety test. The results of that test led to Giles’ arrest.
District officials confirmed they were aware of the incident. They shared a written statement from Giles’ attorney, Benjamin Hartford. Hartford said his client understands the gravity of the situation and recognizes the concerns raised within the school community. The statement noted that Giles is treating the matter with seriousness and respect. Because the legal case is pending, neither Giles nor his counsel will comment on the specific allegations or circumstances surrounding the arrest.
Hartford added that Giles intends to address the matter through the appropriate legal process. The attorney asked that the process be allowed to proceed before conclusions are drawn.
Court records indicate Giles appeared in county court on Monday. He is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 15.
Giles was appointed as the Aurora Public Schools superintendent in April 2023. Prior to that role, he spent more than two decades as an educator in the Cherry Creek School District, rising to top administrative positions.
