Aurora Public Schools Superintendent Michael Giles Jr. was arrested on Halloween morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. The agency confirmed the incident Tuesday, noting that Giles has led the district since July 2023.
A deputy stopped Giles around 12:49 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of E-470 and E. Quincy Avenue. The officer said Giles failed to maintain a single lane and drove through a red traffic light. After administering standardized field sobriety tests, the deputy placed Giles under arrest.
Benjamin Hartford, Giles' attorney, stated that Giles understands the gravity of the situation and recognizes the concerns within the school community. Hartford said Giles is treating the matter with responsibility and respect. Because the legal process is pending, neither Giles nor his counsel will comment on specific allegations or circumstances at this time.
Hartford added that Giles intends to address the matter through the appropriate legal channels. The attorney asked for patience, requesting that the legal process proceed before the community draws conclusions.
Court records show an advisement hearing took place Monday afternoon. Officers set Giles' bond at $1,000. His legal team is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. on December 15.
