Aurora Public Schools Superintendent Michael Giles Jr. was arrested in the early hours of Saturday after an Arapahoe County deputy found him driving under the influence of alcohol.
Agency spokesperson Anders Nelson said a deputy stopped Giles shortly before 12:50 a.m. for failing to stay in his lane and running a red light near E-470 and East Quincy Avenue. The officer administered field sobriety tests before booking the superintendent on suspicion of DUI.
Arapahoe County court records show Giles faces one misdemeanor count and two traffic citations. The citations cover lane usage violations and failing to stop at a red light.
Benjamin Hartford, Giles’ attorney, issued a statement on behalf of the school district. Hartford wrote that Giles understands the seriousness of the situation and recognizes the concerns the news may raise within the community. The statement added that Giles is treating the matter with responsibility and respect. Hartford noted that neither Giles nor his counsel will comment on the specific allegations until the legal process concludes.
Giles joined Aurora Public Schools in 2023 after serving more than 20 years in the Cherry Creek School District. The district’s Board of Education selected him in April of that year, and he began his role three months later.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 15.
