Thirty-two letters. That is the exact number of correspondence packets the third-grade students at Buffalo Trail Elementary in Aurora sent to every professional football team in the National Football League earlier this year. The students, under the guidance of Dr. Sarina Pal, drafted these messages as part of a specialized curriculum designed to integrate sports with academic subjects.
Dr. Sarina Pal has taught for more than two decades and described herself as a devoted fan of the Denver Broncos. Her classroom reflects this interest, filled with orange and blue decorations alongside colors from the University of Miami, another team she supports. She has attended two Super Bowls and shares those experiences with her students, showing them photographs and discussing ticket prices to connect the sport to real-world economics.
The academic approach to football began with a program called NFeLementary. This curriculum was created by Mary Crippen, who gained attention on social media for her innovative teaching methods. Pal joined the program because of its unique requirement that students draft their own fantasy teams and track them throughout the season. The activity extends beyond simple fandom; it requires students to analyze wins and losses, study the geography of the teams, and calculate total points scored to build mathematical skills.
The writing component of the curriculum encouraged the students to send letters to all 32 NFL franchises. Pal noted that while modern students rarely write physical letters, the assignment provided a tangible way to engage with the teams they followed. She reminded the class that professional organizations receive thousands of letters each season, so responses might not be immediate. The students monitored their progress weekly, reviewing statistics and discussing the time zones of their assigned teams.
During a standard class session in November, the students were in the middle of their work when Miles the Mascot entered the room. The visit was unannounced. Brooklyn Cihura, a third grader, stated that the group expected a normal day of instruction before the mascot appeared. Miles spent time with each student, taking photographs and signing autographs. Kavilan Sakthivel described the moment as overwhelming, saying his mind was bursting out and he had to get water to calm down.
The surprise extended beyond the physical visit. The Denver Broncos organization responded to the class by mailing back handwritten notes from players. These replies contained words of wisdom directed at the young fans. Additionally, the team posted a video on TikTok featuring the students' original letters. Pal showed this digital tribute to the class during the visit, providing a direct connection between their classroom work and the professional organization.
The integration of the NFL curriculum into the daily schedule allowed for cross-disciplinary learning without requiring additional class time. The students continued to track their individual fantasy teams alongside the general class activities. The visit from Miles and the subsequent response from the Broncos closed a full cycle of interaction that began with the initial letters sent earlier in the school year. The students finished the day having completed their scheduled academic work, now with new mementos and personal connections to the league.
