The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 5-3 on Thursday night.

William Carrier broke a 3-3 deadlock with 5:08 remaining in regulation. He buried a rebound from a shot by Sebastian Aho off the left wall. The Hurricanes have now won four of their last five games.

Carolina built a two-goal advantage in the first three minutes and twenty seconds. Logan Stankoven opened the scoring after Anthony Duclair and Jean-Gabriel Pageau over-skated a loose puck. Jackson Blake provided the assist, extending his point streak to eight games. Shortly after, Jordan Martinook found Jesperi Kotkaniemi behind the defense. Kotkaniemi redirected the puck for an easy goal to make the score 2-0.

New York tied the game early in the second period. Mitchell Chaffee redirected a shot by Matthew Schaefer for his first goal of the season. Brayden Schenn followed with a wraparound goal just over two minutes later. Andrei Svechnikov restored the Carolina lead sixty seconds later on a feed from Aho. Viktor Eklund evened the score at 3-3 with a one-timer from the slot with less than three minutes left in the period.

In the final minute of the third, Jalen Chatfield added an empty-net goal for Carolina. Brandon Bussi made 24 saves for the Hurricanes. Aho also recorded two assists. For New York, Semyon Varlamov stopped 34 shots. Schenn contributed one goal and one assist.

The Islanders lost their second consecutive game. On Thursday, they signed 33-year-old defenseman Ben Hutton to a one-year contract. Hutton joined the team on a professional tryout on Monday. He recorded 15 points in 55 games with the Vegas Golden Knights last season.

The Hurricanes will host the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. The Islanders will host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.
