Colorado State Patrol troopers found a device designed to look like a bomb on a windowsill near the east entrance of the state Capitol on Wednesday morning. The object was located at 10:34 a.m., prompting an immediate security response within the building.

Trooper Sherri Mendez stated that officers secured the area and began clearing offices on the east side of the structure. By 11:12 a.m., the state patrol evacuated the rest of the building as a precaution. The Denver Police Department bomb squad arrived at the scene at 11:14 a.m. to inspect the item.

A 32-year-old man was arrested at 11:29 a.m. in connection with the incident. State patrol officials transferred him into the custody of the Denver Police Department. The department did not immediately release his name or specify the charges against him.

The bomb squad tested the device and determined it was not a threat to the public. Lincoln Street and 14th Avenue were closed during the response but reopened at 11:49 a.m. alongside the lifting of the evacuation order.

CSP officials referred further questions about the case to Denver police. The Denver Police Department did not respond to an email seeking additional details by press time.
