One World Trade Center opened for business on Nov. 3, 2014. The new 104-story skyscraper stands 1,776 feet tall. It was built at the site of the original World Trade Center towers. The opening marked a milestone for New Yorkers and the nation. That date fell 13 years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Nov. 3 has been a date of major political and historical events in the United States. In 1908, Republican William Howard Taft defeated Democrat William Jennings Bryan to become president. In 1936, Franklin D. Roosevelt won reelection to a second term. He lost only two states to Kansas Gov. Alf Landon. In 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson won the presidency after succeeding John F. Kennedy. He defeated Republican Sen. Barry Goldwater.

The date also marks the founding of major companies. The Chevrolet Motor Car Co. was founded in Detroit in 1911 by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant. In 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton was elected the 42nd president. He defeated President George H.W. Bush. In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden won the presidency. Counting in battleground states delayed the final result for more than three days. President Donald Trump refused to concede and claimed widespread voter fraud.

International and scientific milestones also occurred on this date. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2. The spacecraft carried the dog Laika into orbit. In 1961, U Thant of Burma was elected United Nations secretary-general. He followed Dag Hammarskjold, who died in an airplane crash. In 1979, five Communist Workers Party members died in Greensboro, N.C. They were killed in a clash with Klu Klux Klan and neo-Nazi members during an anti-Klan protest. Six defendants were later acquitted in state and federal trials.

Recent events on Nov. 3 include the restoration of power in lower Manhattan. In 2012, lights returned to the area after Hurricane Sandy caused a blackout that lasted nearly five days. This relief followed a period of significant darkness for residents.

Several notable figures were born on Nov. 3. Economist Amartya Sen is 93. Former Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis is also 93. Vogue global editorial director Anna Wintour is 77. Boxing Hall of Famer Larry Holmes is 77. Comedian Dennis Miller is 73. Actor Dolph Lundgren is 69. Olympic figure skater Evgeni Plushenko is 44. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is 39. Child safety activist Elizabeth Smart is 39. Grammy-winning singer Ella Mai is 32.
